What is Trigger Finger Surgery?

Trigger finger release surgery is a quick and effective procedure to release the A1 pulley at the base of the finger or thumb, instantly relieving clicking or locking caused by trigger finger or trigger thumb. At Excel Clinic in Cardiff, this minimally invasive, 10–20 minute operation is performed under local anaesthetic with no uncomfortable tourniquets used. Most patients return to light activities within 7–10 days and enjoy lasting relief. Initial virtual assessment is free, with surgery typically available as soon as  1–2 weeks later.

What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger Finger is where the finger (or thumb) gets stuck in a bent position and is difficult to straighten.  It is caused by the tendon becoming swollen and catching in the surrounding tendon sheath (white band).

Surgery cuts open the narrowed overlying band (the “A1 pulley”) through a small incision, allowing the tendon to freely move without catching.

How does the virtual assessment work?

To make your treatment as quick, convenient, and cost-effective as possible, we begin with a simple virtual assessment.

When you submit the booking enquiry form, you’ll be asked to upload a clear photo or short video of your affected finger. This allows our consultant hand surgeon to review your symptoms and assess whether you are suitable for a one-stop clinic appointment, where consultation and treatment can often be carried out on the same day.

Why we do it this way

This approach is designed to:

  • Streamline your surgery journey

  • Avoid unnecessary clinic visits

  • Minimise travel, time off work, and overall costs

  • Ensure you are booked directly into the most appropriate appointment

By reviewing your case in advance, we can plan your visit properly — saving you time and helping you get treated sooner.

Will I still be examined in person?

Yes — absolutely.
If you are booked into a one-stop clinic, you will still have a full face-to-face consultation and examination with the surgeon before any procedure is carried out. Treatment only proceeds if it is clinically appropriate and you are happy to go ahead.

What if I prefer a face-to-face consultation first?

That is no problem at all.
You are welcome to book a traditional in-person consultation prior to any treatment. The fee for a face-to-face consultation is £150.

Our virtual assessment simply helps us plan your care better — it never replaces proper clinical examination or informed consent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trigger finger release surgery

You want to avoid any trigger finger steroid injections within the 3 months prior to surgery.

You should organise someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

You will want to make work arrangements for 2-4 weeks post surgery depending on your type of work.

If you are on certain types of medication such as blood thinners, your surgeon will discuss stopping these prior to surgery.

Trigger finger release surgery can be completed in around 15 minutes. However, there is additional time required for injection of local anaesthesia, application of tourniquet and so on, which will add to the total time.

Yes. As the surgery is done under local anaesthetic you will be awake, but you will not feel any pain.

If you are taking medication that thins the blood, you must inform us so we can make arrangements to stop this prior to surgery. This is to minimise bleeding during and after the operation.

Trigger finger is diagnosed clinically on examination, therefore no tests or investigations will be required.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved, including infection, nerve damage, stiffness, and pain at the scar site. However, trigger finger surgery is generally considered safe and effective. Your surgeon will discuss risks with you in more detail prior to your operation and obtaining your consent.

You will be wearing a bulky dressing for 3 days after your surgery.  You will have a small plaster dressing which will remain for around 2 weeks until the wound is healed and stitches are removed.  You will need to avoid heavy lifting for 3 weeks post surgery.

For office based jobs you are able to return to work after 1-2 weeks.  If you have a physical job you will need around 3-6 weeks off work depending on your type of job.

You can have trigger finger surgery on both hands in the same setting. However, you will need someone to look after your intimate needs for 2 weeks after the surgery. This will include washing, toiletting, dressing, and so on.

You can start to drive once the wound has starting healing and the bulky bandage is off.  You need to ensure you are able to do an emergency stop safely, if required.  It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company before returning to driving.

As we are a private clinic, we are able to serve patients from all areas, including Cardiff, but also neighbouring places such as Newport, Swansea, Bristol, Somerset and Gloucester.

Submit the booking form at the bottom of the page. When prompted please upload a video clearly demonstrating your trigger finger fully closed then opening. This will be sent for the hand surgery team to review and book you in for your one stop appointment.
