Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

Yes, blepharoplasty is commonly referred to as eyelid surgery. It’s a procedure aimed at improving the appearance or function of the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper or lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty can address issues such as drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, and puffiness, making the eye area look more youthful and refreshed.

Blepharoplasty is usually not covered by the NHS when done for cosmetic reasons, as it’s considered an elective procedure. However, in certain cases, the NHS may cover blepharoplasty if it is deemed medically necessary—for example, if excess skin on the upper eyelids obstructs vision or interferes with daily activities.

At Excel clinic, we make the process of having blepharoplasty surgery as smooth and comfortable as possible. Submit a booking form (on this page), and we will take care of the rest!  Our Blepharoplasty team will be in contact with you shortly after to arrange your consultations with your surgeon.

Yes – you will pay a deposit to secure the booking for the surgery.  Do not worry, this will be taken off the total price, which you will pay on the day of your surgery!

In preparation for eyelid surgery, your surgeon will advise you to stop blood thinning medication prior to your surgery.

Smoking should be stopped before and after surgery to improve healing.

You will need someone to drive or accompany you to and from your appointment.

It is also advised to take  time off work, the duration depending on your job.

Blepharoplasty typically takes about 1-2 hours depending on whether you’re having upper eyelids or lower eyelids. We perform the procedure under local anesthesic to ensure a comfortable experience.

Yes. As the surgery is done under local anaesthetic you will be awake, but you will not feel any pain as the area will be numbed.

If you are taking medication that thins the blood, you must inform us so we can make arrangements to stop this prior to surgery. This is to minimise bleeding during and after the operation.

As with any surgery, blepharoplasty has potential risks, though they are generally rare. These may include infection, bruising, temporary blurred vision, or dry eyes. In rare cases, there may be asymmetry or scarring. We will discuss all the potential risks with you before the procedure.

Initial recovery usually takes about 1-2 weeks, during which bruising and swelling will gradually subside. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and light activities after a week. Full recovery, including the final results, can take up to 6 weeks as the skin fully heals.

Most patients take about 5-7 days off work to allow for initial recovery from swelling and bruising. If your job involves strenuous activity, you may need to take up to 14 days off to ensure a comfortable and safe return.

We advise complete rest for 48 hours following surgery, and to avoid exercise for 2 weeks.

You are able to return to driving after around 2 weeks, depending on individual recovery and any vision effects from swelling. It is essential to wait until you feel comfortable and confident with your vision before driving.
