What Is Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift or eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes or repositions excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids.

There are two main types:

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty

  • Removes excess skin causing hooded or drooping eyelids

  • Can improve vision if eyelids obstruct sight

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

  • Reduces under-eye bags and puffiness

  • Smooths loose or crepey lower eyelid skin

At Excel Clinic, surgery is typically performed under local anaesthetic, allowing you to walk in and walk out the same day.

Our clinic provides private blepharoplasty in Cardiff for patients seeking natural, refreshed results without hospital stays or long waiting times.

Submit our simply booking form on this page to you on our system, and then one of our facial cosmetic surgery team will contact you shortly afterward to discuss convenient appointment options.
  • Your journey starts with a doctor-led consultation. We’ll assess facial balance, take clinical photos, discuss your goals, explain expected results and risks, and agree a personalised plan. You’ll receive written information and a cool-off period before booking.

  • On the day: You arrive, consent is reconfirmed, and pre-op photos are taken.

  • Anaesthetic: Local anaesthetic numbs the area completely.

  • Surgery: Precise skin reduction; meticulous, layered closure with fine sutures.

  • Home the same day: A small dressing is applied and aftercare is reviewed before you leave.

Days 1–3: Mild swelling/tightness; cool packs and head elevation help.
Days 5–7: Suture removal; most patients feel “socially presentable” soon after.
Weeks 2–6: Swelling settles; scar care (silicone/ointment, sun protection) begins.
Weeks 6–12: Final definition emerges as tissues soften. We review your progress.
Your care doesn’t end with surgery:

  • Aftercare package containing instructions and guidance.
  • 4-week follow-up appointment

What happens during Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty at Excel Clinic is a carefully planned, consultant-led day-case procedure, usually performed under local anaesthetic. This allows for a safe, comfortable experience and faster recovery.

Before the procedure

On the day of surgery:

  • Your surgeon will carefully mark the natural eyelid creases to guide precise incision placement

  • The procedure will be explained again, and any final questions answered

  • Local anaesthetic is administered to fully numb the area

You will be awake but relaxed and comfortable throughout.

During upper eyelid blepharoplasty

For upper eyelid surgery:

  • A fine incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid

  • Excess skin and, where necessary, small amounts of fat are removed

  • The underlying muscle may be gently tightened

  • The incision is closed with fine sutures designed to heal discreetly

Scars are typically well hidden in the eyelid crease once healed.

During lower eyelid blepharoplasty

For lower eyelid surgery:

  • The incision is made either just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (depending on anatomy and goals)

  • Fat causing under-eye bags is removed or repositioned

  • Loose skin may be tightened to create a smoother contour

This approach helps reduce puffiness while maintaining a natural appearance.

You may benefit from eyelid surgery if you experience:

  • Drooping or sagging upper eyelids that make you look tired or older

  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes that haven’t improved with creams or non-surgical treatments

  • Reduced peripheral vision due to excess upper eyelid skin

  • Difficulty applying make-up because of loose eyelid skin

  • A consistently tired or aged appearance despite feeling well
