What is a ganglion cyst?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that develops near a joint or tendon, most commonly on the wrist or hand. They can vary in size and often feel firm or rubbery to the touch. While ganglions are non-cancerous, they can cause pain, stiffness, weakness, or unsightly swelling that interferes with daily activities.

When is ganglion removal needed?

Although some ganglion cysts settle on their own, many patients choose removal because the lump is:

  • Painful — especially when pressing on nearby nerves or restricting movement

  • Restrictive — making everyday tasks, work, or hobbies difficult

  • Unattractive — causing self-consciousness due to a visible lump on the wrist or hand

  • Recurring — often coming back after aspiration (needle drainage)

Surgical ganglion removal is a definitive treatment that removes both the cyst sac and its root, lowering the chance of recurrence. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you can usually go home the same day.

Benefits include:

✅Relief from pain and stiffness

✅Restoration of function and grip strength

✅A smoother, more natural appearance

✅Minimal downtime compared to NHS waiting lists

Patient Success stories

My son had a Ganglion Cyst removed from his wrist with this clinic. Great communication throughout, easy to book and seamless on the day. Healed really well (he was back in the gym 2 weeks later!) Nice follow up message the day after his procedure and a virtual follow up 6 weeks later (virtual at our request as we were located an hour and half’s drive away). Highly recommend for anyone needing this procedure.

The lump on my wrist was really getting in the way at work and making typing painful. The team at Excel Clinic explained everything clearly, and the procedure itself was quick and surprisingly comfortable. Within a week I was back to normal activities — and the lump hasn’t returned.

My ganglion kept coming back after needle drainage. I finally chose to have it surgically removed. The staff at Excel were so friendly and supportive. The recovery was straightforward and my wrist feels stronger — I wish I had done it sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ganglion excision surgery

You should organise someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

You will want to make work arrangements for 1-4 weeks post surgery depending on your type of work.

If you are on certain types of medication such as blood thinners, your surgeon will discuss stopping these prior to surgery.

No — the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. You may feel some pressure, but the area will be numb. After the procedure, mild discomfort or swelling is normal and usually settles within a few days with simple pain relief.

Aspiration (needle drainage) often leads to recurrence. Surgical removal is the most effective treatment, as it removes both the cyst and its stalk. While there’s always a small chance of recurrence, this is much lower than with aspiration alone.

Most patients return to light activities within a few days. Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting may need to be avoided for 2–3 weeks. We’ll give you clear aftercare guidance and follow-up support.

A small scar will be left where the cyst was removed. Our surgeons use precise, minimal incisions to keep scarring discreet, and scars usually fade well over time.

Like all minor surgery, ganglion removal carries some small risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, stiffness, or recurrence of the cyst. These are uncommon, and most patients heal quickly with excellent results. At Excel Clinic, procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic in sterile conditions, and our aftercare team is always available to support your recovery.

NHS waiting lists for ganglion removal can be months or even years long. At Excel Clinic, you’ll be seen promptly, treated by experienced surgeons, and cared for in a supportive environment — with direct access to our aftercare team.

As we are a private clinic, we are able to serve patients from all areas, including Cardiff, but also neighbouring places such as Newport, Swansea, Bristol, Somerset and Gloucester.
