Inguinal Hernia Repair in Cardiff – Fast, Affordable Relief for Over 60s

Groin, or Inguinal hernias can limit activities, especially those involving lifting or bending. They can also limit mobility and cause frustration.

Unfortunately, inguinal hernias often get larger and more painful with time, making them harder to ignore.  Health risks include hernia strangulation and digestion issues.

Hernias are treated as routine on the NHS, with waiting times upto 3-4 years from referral to surgery.

If you’re struggling to get it treated on the NHS due to long waiting lists, or finding private healthcare unaffordable, worry no more!

We are over £1000 cheaper than other private healthcare providers, and with the benefit of local anaesthetic and sedation, you can have a pain free operation and walk out immediately afterwards, without any period of observation needed!

With a first class inguinal hernia service based in South Wales, Excel Clinic is here to help!

At Excel Clinic, we specialise in inguinal hernia repair surgery in over patients over the age of 55, without the high price points or the long wait!

What is an Inguinal Hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, pushes through a weak spot in the groin muscles. It can cause discomfort, a visible bulge, or pain during activities like coughing, bending, or lifting.

While hernias don’t always cause immediate issues, they can lead to complications if left untreated. Repair surgery is the most effective solution to restore your comfort and health.

Yes – you will pay a deposit to secure the booking for the surgery.  Do not worry, this will be taken off the total price, which you will pay on the day of your surgery!

Shower the night before, or on the morning of, your surgery.

Do not shave the surgical area youtself. Your surgical team will do this on the day of your surgery.

It is important to wear comfortable and loose trousers. Avoid wearing belts as this will cause discomfort after the surgery.

You should organise someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

You will need to take some time off work for recovery.  Everyones recovery period is different, and the time you need off work will depend on the naature of your work (see work FAQ)

If you are on certain types of medication such as blood thinners, your surgeon will discuss stopping these prior to surgery.

The procedure will usually take around an hour.  This will include preparation time, administration of local anaesthetic and the surgery itself.

Yes. As the surgery is done under local anaesthetic you will be awake, but you will not feel any pain as the area will be numbed.

In certain cases, sedation may be used with a combination of pain medication to further relieve anxiety and pain.

If you are taking medication that thins the blood, you must inform us so we can make arrangements to stop this prior to surgery. This is to minimise bleeding during and after the operation.  It is important to inform your surgeon if you are on blood thinning medications.

Your surgeon will examine you prior to surgery.  If examination clearly demonstrates a hernia then no tests are needed. For subtle symptoms, an ultrasound scan may be arranged to confirm the diagnosis.

Unfortunately not – Inguinal hernias get worse with time, meaning they get bigger and more uncomfortable or painful with time.

Recovery times can vary depending on individual health and the type of procedure, but most patients:

  • Can resume light activities within a few days.
  • Return to normal daily tasks within 1-2 weeks.
  • Engage in strenuous activities or heavy lifting after 4-6 weeks, depending on your surgeon’s advice.

The time you need off work depends on the nature of your job:

  • Desk Jobs: If your work is sedentary, you can usually return within 1-2 weeks, once you’re comfortable sitting for extended periods.
  • Light Manual Work: Jobs involving mild physical activity may require 2-3 weeks off to allow proper healing.
  • Heavy Manual Work: If your job involves heavy lifting or strenuous physical tasks, you may need up to 4-6 weeks off to avoid strain and ensure complete recovery.

You can return to driving when:

  • You are no longer taking strong pain medications that may impair judgment.
  • You feel comfortable pressing the brake pedal without hesitation or pain.
This typically happens within 1-2 weeks post-surgery, but it’s essential to consult your surgeon before getting behind the wheel.

We perform the open hernia repair technique.

The British Hernia Society recommends using the open technique to repair most primary single-sided hernias (those appearing for the first time on just one side).

Keyhole surgery tends to have a quicker recovery time in people who:

  • have been treated before and the hernia has come back (recurrent hernia)
  • have hernias on both sides at the same time (bilateral hernias)

However, the risk of serious complications, such as the surgeon accidentally damaging the bowel, are higher with keyhole surgery than with open surgery.

As we are a private (non NHS) clinic, we are not bound by the patient’s location. We receive patients from a large area, including Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire!
